Hats, scarves and gloves
Hats, scarves and gloves becoming increasingly important every year during cold seasons. They help keeping us comfortable and warm, even when the weather is cold outside. Summer hats can be as important in a hot sunny day outside as winter cloths in the cold. Durability and comfort those products provide us are very important, so are the ethical aspects of their production. Therefore it is worthwhile to invest some time to research and choose a cruelty-free products.
Commonly used materials and fabrics
Wool, fur and leather are frequently used for making winter cloths. Hats, gloves and scarves aren't the exception. There are some great synthetic, plant based and blended alternatives available. We encourage you to choose those alternatives instead of animal based products to reduce an animal suffering in farming industry.
- Hats
- We all know the feeling of freezing we get outside on a cold winter morning. Well, hats can save our heads from that cold as well as protect us from the sun during hot summer.
Winter hats are frequently made of animal derived products like fur, wool and leather, although great vegan alternatives are available: cotton, bamboo, synthetics acrylic and fleece fabric to count some. Please beware that even mostly vegan hat can be decorated with real animal fur.
Summer hats are meant to be light and breathable so a majority of options are vegan. Summer hats would be typically made of cotton, various synthetic and man made fibers and blends and, unfortunately, some hats can be made of silk and wool. There is very important to check your hat's fabric before making your purchase. - Scarves
- Scarves are made to keep our neck warm in a cold winter and save us from getting a strep throat. We are also putting on our scarves as a great fashion choice, a peace that holds the composition of our outfit together.
Scarves most commonly are made of wool, although cotton and synthetic alternatives are also available. Cotton and linen fabrics are great choice for a light fashionable scarves. Scarves can also be decorated by a real animal fur, that's why it is extra important to check the product label. - Gloves
- During cold winter weather if we go outside, pair of warm gloves become a significant part of our outfit. Mittens, a type of gloves that cover the whole hand without individual openings for each finger except thumb, are mostly used by children. Mittens are most commonly made of wool, but can be made of other materials same as gloves.
As the majority of cold weather products, gloves can be made of animal based and vegan materials, or from combinations of the two kinds. Commonly used animal based materials include leather, wool and silk for lighter gloves. Vegan ones can be made of synthetic and man made fibers or plant based, especially cotton. Generally speaking synthetic alternatives are cheaper and more durable.
Even though here we are mostly talking about casual clothing, there are other types of gloves worth mentioning: protective and safety gloves that are usually made of rubber, synthetic or plastic materials based on their specific purpose and sometimes can be made of a non-vegan leather; medical gloves – especially gained some publicity during COVID 19 pandemic, along with medical masks. Medical gloves are typically made of latex, nitrile, vinyl (PVC) and sometimes other synthetic materials.
Last word of advise
As we've been saying in other vegan clothing guides, the easiest way to ensure cruelty-free purchase is buying a vegan or vegan-friendly labeled products, but not all companies labeling their vegan products as such. Asking the stuff is a great option while buying in the store, if they don't know there is an option of contacting a manufacturer or reaching out to a vegan group for some advise. There are also some apps available for finding out if products are vegan.
In addition, there are other ethical issues that's important to keep in mind, such as human workers treatment and environmental sustainability. As a general rule, recycled and organic brands are more environmentally friendly and will offer better solution for ethical workforce treatment. Companies specializing on vegan or cruelty free textile production are also a good bet on ethical and environmental issues.
Consumer's awareness on those issues will push the industry one step further in solving them. Please keep those issues in mind during your next shopping trip for some winter clothes.
